Wheel Nuts M12x1.25 vs M12x1.5: Thread Pitch Guide

Project KICS wheel nuts showing aftermarket wheel hardware options

Wheel nuts are not universal. Two sets can look almost identical but use different thread pitch, seat shape, length or diameter. Before fitting aftermarket wheels, the wheel hardware needs to match both the vehicle and the wheel.

What does M12x1.25 or M12x1.5 mean?

The first part describes the nominal thread diameter and the second describes the thread pitch. An M12x1.25 wheel nut has a 12 mm nominal thread diameter with 1.25 mm between threads. M12x1.5 also uses a 12 mm nominal diameter, but with a 1.5 mm thread pitch.

Because the thread pitch is different, M12x1.25 and M12x1.5 wheel nuts are not interchangeable. Forcing the wrong thread onto a stud can damage the nut or stud.

Do not choose wheel nuts by PCD alone

PCD tells you the bolt-circle pattern of the wheel, such as 5x100 or 5x114.3. It does not tell you the wheel-nut thread pitch. Two vehicles can share the same PCD while using different wheel hardware.

If you are unsure what PCD means, see our wheel PCD explained guide.

Thread pitch is only one part of the fitment

You should also confirm:

  • Thread diameter and pitch — for example M12x1.25, M12x1.5 or M14x1.5.
  • Seat type — aftermarket wheels may require a specific taper or seat design.
  • Nut diameter and socket clearance — some wheels have narrow nut wells.
  • Nut length — the nut needs suitable engagement without interfering with the wheel design.
  • Open or closed end — this can matter with longer studs.
  • Correct tightening procedure — follow the vehicle, wheel and hardware manufacturer's specifications.

M12x1.25 vs M12x1.5: which one do I need?

Use the specification for your exact vehicle and stud setup. Do not rely only on brand, wheel size or PCD. Vehicle generations can change hardware, and modified cars may no longer use the original studs.

If the car has aftermarket wheel studs, confirm the actual stud specification before ordering nuts. If you are uncertain, measure or verify the hardware rather than test-fitting a nut by force.

Wheel nuts and aftermarket JDM wheels

When fitting RAYS, WORK, SSR, Enkei, BBS or other aftermarket wheels, confirm the wheel's nut-seat requirements as well as the vehicle thread. A correct PCD and offset do not guarantee that the original factory hardware is appropriate for the aftermarket wheel.

For the rest of the fitment process, read our wheel offset guide and hub-centric ring and centre-bore guide.
