Evo 7/8/9 Brembo Wheel Clearance: 17 vs 18 Inch
Will 17-inch or 18-inch wheels clear the brakes on an Evo 7, Evo 8 or Evo 9? Wheel diameter alone cannot prove Brembo clearance. The important checks are inner-barrel clearance, spoke-to-caliper clearance, PCD, centre bore, wheel width, offset and the exact brake package on your Mitsubishi. This technical guide expands on our Mitsubishi Evo 7/8/9 wheel fitment guide.
Two clearance measurements matter
Radial clearance is the gap between the outside of the brake caliper and the inside of the wheel barrel. Axial clearance is the distance between the front face of the caliper and the back of the wheel spokes. A wheel can pass one check and fail the other. This is why a generic claim that “18-inch wheels fit Evo Brembos” is incomplete.
Confirm the exact Evo model and brake system before comparing wheels. A factory brake setup is not automatically interchangeable with an aftermarket big-brake kit, and similar-looking wheel models may use different face profiles or disk designs.
Evo 7–9: 17-inch versus 18-inch wheels
| Consideration | 17-inch wheel | 18-inch wheel |
|---|---|---|
| Inner barrel | Less nominal diameter: check radial clearance carefully | More nominal diameter, but clearance still varies by barrel design |
| Spokes | Face profile determines caliper gap | Face profile still determines caliper gap |
| Tyres | Often permits more sidewall at a suitable overall diameter | Often needs a lower-profile tyre at a similar overall diameter |
| Fitment certainty | Exact wheel and brake combination must be checked | Exact wheel and brake combination must be checked |
A popular 17x9 specification is not automatically a better or worse choice than an 18x9.5 specification. Wider wheels also change tyre and strut clearance, even when the brake barrel fits.
How to verify a wheel against your Brembos
- Record whether the car is an Evo 7, 8 or 9, its year and exact front and rear brake equipment. Confirm whether calipers, rotors or adapters have been changed.
- Record the candidate wheel's 5x114.3 PCD, nominal width, diameter, offset, centre bore, model, production specification and wheel face or disk type.
- Request the specific wheel's brake-clearance diagram, known application approval or the brake manufacturer's full-size profile.
- If a compatible profile is available, print it at 100% scale, verify the scale reference and compare it to the actual wheel mounting face, inner barrel and spoke profile.
- Check whether brake clearance remains adequate around the caliper and any wheel weights; also verify the tyre, suspension, guards, hub engagement, load rating and correct fasteners.
Race Technologies, a Brembo official partner, explains the brake-to-wheel clearance procedure and cites 3 mm for the Brembo Performance systems addressed in its instructions. Do not apply that figure to unrelated original-equipment or aftermarket brake setups unless the manufacturer approves it.
Does wheel offset guarantee Brembo clearance?
No. At an identical wheel width, changing from +38 to +22 shifts the nominal rim position outward by 16 mm. It changes inner suspension and outer guard clearance, but it does not tell you whether the wheel spokes clear the caliper. Two 18x9.5 +22 wheels from different designs can have very different spoke shapes. A spacer can change caliper position relative to a wheel, but it also alters track, hub engagement, fastener needs, guard space and possibly legal compliance. Never assume a spacer is the appropriate fix.

These are specification examples, not confirmed brake-clearance approvals. Check live stock and the exact face/disk configuration on each product page.

Evo Brembo wheel-clearance FAQ
Do all 18x9.5 5x114.3 wheels clear Evo 8 or Evo 9 Brembos?
No. PCD, width, diameter and offset are necessary checks but do not describe spoke or barrel clearance.
Is an 18-inch wheel always safer for Brembo clearance?
No. A larger nominal diameter can improve potential barrel room but cannot guarantee axial spoke clearance, tyre or suspension fitment.
Will an Evo X clearance chart work for an Evo 7–9?
Do not assume so. Check the exact hardware and see our separate Evo X fitment guide.
These guidelines are for selecting comparison candidates, not a guarantee that any specified wheel will fit an individual modified or standard Evo.
