Nissan Silvia S15 Wheel Offset Guide: 17x9 vs 18x9.5
How different are 17x9 +22 and 18x9.5 +22 wheels on an S15, and what happens when you change a 9.5-inch wheel from +22 to +38? You need to separate diameter, nominal bead-seat width and offset before choosing tyres or predicting guard and strut clearance. This is a technical companion to our main Nissan Silvia S15 wheel fitment guide, not a list of guaranteed bolt-on sizes.
Verify your actual S15's hubs and brakes first
All examples below are for 5x114.3 five-stud wheel specifications. Check the physical stud count and PCD on your car: S15 variants, imports, modified hubs and conversions must not be assumed identical. Also verify centre bore, fasteners, nut-seat type, brake package, wheel load rating and actual tyre size. Fitment requires more than selecting a wheel by its model name.
17x9 vs 18x9.5: the geometry
From 17x9 to 18x9.5, nominal wheel diameter increases by 1 inch and bead-seat width increases by half an inch (12.7 mm). At the same offset, half of that width increase—approximately 6.35 mm—is added on each side of the centreline. These are nominal bead-seat calculations, not measurements of a wheel's outer flange, spoke face or mounted tyre.
| Example wheel | What changes | What still needs checking |
|---|---|---|
| 17x9 +22 | Baseline for these comparisons | Tyre, brakes, strut and guards |
| 18x9.5 +22 | Nominal bead seats extend ~6.35 mm farther inward and outward than 17x9 +22 | Reduced inner and outer space, tyre profile and brake face |
| 18x9.5 +38 | Compared with 18x9.5 +22, the rim sits 16 mm farther inboard | Less inner strut clearance, generally more outer-guard room |
| 18x9.5 +12 | Compared with 18x9.5 +22, the rim sits 10 mm farther outboard | Outer guard/tyre clearance and brake geometry |
Why offset changes matter so much on a Nissan S15
At the same nominal 18x9.5 width, a lower +22 offset puts the wheel outward compared with +38. This may be attractive for an aggressive stance but reduces outer tyre-to-guard clearance. The +38 version moves the rim inward by 16 mm, which increases nominal outer-guard room while reducing the inner gap to struts and other suspension components. The correct balance depends on your S15's ride height, tyre shoulder shape, alignment, guard work and suspension geometry.
Offset does not prove brake clearance. The back of each spoke and the wheel barrel can differ between designs even when diameter, PCD, width and offset are identical. Multi-piece wheels may also have different disk profiles. For more on that check, read our wheel brake-caliper clearance guide.
Square versus staggered S15 wheel setups
A square setup uses the same nominal front and rear width. It may simplify tyre management where front/rear offsets and tyre sizes allow, but front brake and steering clearance still need separate checks. A staggered S15 setup places wider wheels at the rear. For example, a wheel set described as 18x9 +19 front and 18x10 +24 rear has two distinct geometry and tyre-clearance problems to solve; a rear fitment being possible does not make the same wheel suitable at the front.
Confirm tyre width and overall rolling diameter rather than comparing rim labels alone. Wheel width is not a tyre measurement, and two tyres of the same nominal width can have different shoulders. Lowering springs, coilovers, altered camber, wide-body kits and guard rolling can all change usable clearance. S15 owners should verify full steering-lock and suspension-compression travel with a qualified fitter; HausofWheels does not offer test fitting or installation.
Compare real genuine S15 wheel specifications
Current HausofWheels catalogue examples include RAYS Gram Lights 57DR 17x9 +22, RAYS 57DR 18x9.5 +22, SSR Professor SP1 Silver 18x9.5 +25 and staggered SSR SP1 18x9 +19 / 18x10 +24. These are examples to compare; they are not blanket S15 fitment certifications, and listing availability may change.
If you like multi-piece wheels, our SSR SP1 S15 wheel fitment guide explains the importance of disk types and tyre selection. Browse the S15 wheels collection or ask HausofWheels about your exact five-stud and brake configuration before ordering.
Nissan S15 wheel-size FAQ
Is 18x9.5 +22 a guaranteed bolt-on Nissan S15 size?
No. It is a commonly discussed specification, not a guarantee of front/rear guard, tyre, brake or suspension clearance on every car.
Does +38 clear S15 brakes better than +22?
Not necessarily. Higher offset changes nominal rim position; spoke-to-caliper clearance depends on the actual wheel face and brake assembly.
Can any S15 accept a 5x114.3 wheel?
No. Confirm that the specific car has five-stud 5x114.3 hubs or an appropriately engineered conversion, then check all remaining fitment details.
Wheel dimensions here are nominal comparisons only, not a fitting certificate, legal approval or substitute for measuring the actual vehicle.
