R34 GT-R 18x9.5 +22 vs 18x10.5 +15: Wheel Fitment & Offset

Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R on RAYS TE37 wheels, illustration for wheel width and offset guide

Choosing between 18x9.5 +22 and 18x10.5 +15 for a Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R (BNR34)? Both are 18-inch wheel specifications, but their nominal position relative to the hub is substantially different. This guide calculates that difference so you can judge the implications for tyre, guard and suspension clearance before choosing a specific wheel design.

This is a detailed sizing companion to our main R34 GT-R wheel fitment guide. If you own an R34 GT-T or 25GT Turbo instead, use the separate R34 GT-T guide: GT-R body and wheel-clearance assumptions should not be copied across.

Quick answer: how much wider and farther out?

Going from an 18x9.5 +22 wheel to an 18x10.5 +15 wheel increases nominal bead-seat width by 25.4 mm and lowers the positive offset by 7 mm. With the same hub mounting plane:

  • The outer bead-seat edge moves approximately 19.7 mm farther outward toward the guard.
  • The inner bead-seat edge moves approximately 5.7 mm farther inward toward the suspension.
  • The nominal diameter remains 18 inches; this comparison alone says nothing about spoke-to-caliper or inner-barrel clearance.

These are geometry calculations, not a bolt-on clearance verdict. Actual rim lips, tyres, alignment and body modifications alter the complete package.

R34 GT-R wheel width and offset comparison table

For a common point of reference, the factory BNR34 GT-R specification discussed in our main guide is 18x9 +30. The figures below compare nominal bead-seat positions at the same hub face. Positive outer numbers indicate more outward extension; positive inner numbers indicate greater inward extension and potentially less strut room.

Wheel specification Outer edge versus 18x9 +30 Inner edge versus 18x9 +30 Meaning
18x9 +30 Baseline Baseline Factory sizing reference
18x9.5 +22 ~14.4 mm farther out ~1.7 mm less inward Moderately wider and outward versus the factory rim
18x10.5 +15 ~34.1 mm farther out ~4.1 mm farther inward Significantly more guard and inner-clearance demands

At 18x9.5 +22 versus 18x10.5 +15 specifically, the latter uses approximately 19.7 mm more outer room and 5.7 mm more inner room, before considering the tyre. Nominal width is measured between tyre bead seats rather than the external wheel flange edges.

How to interpret the difference on a BNR34

18x9.5 +22: a less outward specification

Compared with 18x10.5 +15, the 18x9.5 +22 specification demands less space near the outer guard, while placing its inner bead seat a little farther from the suspension. It is still wider and farther outward than the factory 18x9 +30 reference. Confirm the exact tyre section width, ride height and brake package; do not assume a 9.5-inch wheel is automatically bolt-on.

18x10.5 +15: a more aggressive width and offset

The 18x10.5 +15 specification reaches almost 20 mm farther outward than the 18x9.5 +22 rim and takes up roughly 6 mm additional inner room. The chosen tyre may project beyond the rim edge and can affect guards, liners and suspension through steering and compression. Modified guards, alignment, suspension or tyres may be required, but that depends on the individual build; the dimensions alone cannot decide.

Brake clearance is a separate test

Neither of these sizes guarantees clearance of the factory Brembo system or an aftermarket brake kit. Two wheels with identical 18x10.5 +15 sizing may use different spoke designs, disk profiles or barrel shapes. You need the exact wheel and brake combination, not only PCD and offset. Read our brake-clearance guide for the spoke and barrel checks.

For the same reason, a wider or lower-offset wheel is not automatically a solution to a caliper-clearance problem. Spacers, where permitted, change hub engagement, fastener requirements, track and outer guard room; never assume they are an appropriate remedy.

R34 GT-R offset and sizing FAQ

Does 18x10.5 +15 sit 7 mm farther out than 18x9.5 +22?

No. Seven millimetres is only the offset difference. The extra inch of width adds 12.7 mm of nominal rim width on the outer side, so the combined outer-edge difference is about 19.7 mm.

Are 18x9.5 +22 wheels guaranteed to clear R34 GT-R Brembos?

No. Wheel diameter, width, PCD and offset cannot establish spoke or barrel clearance. Confirm the wheel's face design and the exact brake equipment.

Does this comparison apply to R34 GT-T?

No. The geometry arithmetic works for any two rims, but the body-clearance benchmark and factory configuration discussed here are for the R34 GT-R. Refer to the R34 GT-T-specific guide.

What do I need before ordering a wider set?

Record front and rear wheel widths and offsets, complete tyre sizes and measured tyre widths, brake assembly, centre bore, hub and fasteners, suspension height, alignment, guards and any aftermarket modifications. Confirm the exact wheel model's load rating and caliper clearance.
